Recreation, Leisure, & Sports
Variety is the spice of our recreational life starting with a park that features baseball diamonds, picnic and camping facilities and a playground for the little folks. Golfers can enjoy 18 holes at Madge Lake south west of the Village. Come winter, our four sheet curling rink, along with skating/hockey ice make the Benito & District Recreation Complex a very busy spot. Curling is an important part of winter life in Benito, from young to old, everyone curls. Although all are great curlers, some have acquired championship status including: - Ed "The Wrench" Werenich - a two time World Champion. - Kari, Staci, Charlene Goodman and Kathleen Klemetski - winners of the 1999 Canada Winter Games Gold Medal in Curling. - Bill Schneider, Robert Staples, Terry Schure and Lorne Mydynski - winners of the National Elks Curling in 2004, the Schneider rink was also the winner of this event in 1997, 1999 and 2000. - The Kinaschuk rink, consisting of Rick Kinaschuk, Byron Zbirun, Bev Stewart and Rick Mullin from Benito Fire Department won the Canadian Firefighters Curling Championships in 2002. Thunderhill, located west of Benito, provides fantastic slopes for the skiing or snowboarding enthusiast in the winter. It also boasts year round hiking trails and down hill bike trials in the sunner. Snowmobiling, cross country skiing and ice fishing are also enjoyed in the immediate area. Our valley has been discribed as one of the most beautiful spots in Manitoba, a nature lover's paradise. Wildlife such as moose, elk, deer, bears, foxes and coyotes are in abundance in the region's luch, green forests, while species of birds and fish are too numerous to mention. Both hunter and the photographer can fulfill their dreams in our pristine valley. |
