FYDE

Starting in the fall 1998, FYDE (First Year by Distance Education) will begin offering courses here in Swan River. FYDE has been designed to accommodate a wide range of students in rural areas. Individuals who are currently working to support their families, housewives raising their families, or younger students who just want to stay at home that extra year to save money may all attend FYDE. Students will be able to take any number of courses from one to five. Some courses will have a lab component

.
There are many benefits of FYDE. Some of which are:
 1. Decreased living expenses. Students wishing to try university but can not afford to move away from home or those wishing to stay home and save money for future education, have the opportunity to try university without the cost of relocation to Winnipeg or Brandon.
 2. Students have an extra year of adjustment before moving away. If students are unsure of what career they want to take, or are not sure if they can handle university, students can take some or all courses in the first year while staying at home.
 3. Students have a more personal campus, that offers student advising, study skills, help with forms or letters etc.. In a situation that is familiar to them.

Courses are offered through the current Learnlinc Virtual Classroom Software which is run off of the Windows 95 Set-up, through the internet. Students are guided through their 3 hour/week lectures using this system. Students are able to take notes while the lecture is presented, or simply refer to professor prepared notes obtained from the internet.
